You’re Your Own Editor
When I first read this postcard, I asked myself, “Your invited . . .what?” Because no matter how often my editor’s eye catches published typos, I still find it hard to believe that an organization as enormous as AAA does not have a paid editor making sure mistakes like this one never land in a customer’s mailbox.
But it happens to all of us. And a mix-up like your and you’re is an easy one to miss if you’re counting on spell-check to save your ass. If you missed my previous post on apostrophes and the difference between its and it’s, this might be a good time to take a peek.
Because remembering the difference between you’re and your is a matter of understanding the mighty apostrophe and its uses. You’re, the one with the apostrophe, is just short for you are. And your, the shorter one, expresses possession. So the sentence above, the title of this post, translates to:
You are your own editor.
Because you are, beloved readers, you are. Unless of course you hire me to do it!
